Yemen Surf: An Arabian Dream?

Yemen is becoming a popular place surf-wise. Swell in the Arabian Sea is generating some interest from several intrepid crew. An Italian documentary on surfing in Yemen has been produced, it includes some stunning music and images. A surf magazine sent a little party into the country, and the Surfers of Dubai have run a few missions into the desert. We particularly like the efforts of Stuart Butler to surf Yemen, amongst many other difficult destinations (including the entire west coast of Africa).     Clif,

    The current NOAA charts are showing a decent swell heading NE up the Arabian Sea parallel to the Yemeni coastline. In fact the charts for the next seven days have the swell situation remaining static, meaning there should be waves in Yemen for the entire forecast period. I’m wondering if this is just a random storm that is lingering for a while, or if the swell is being created by regular winds crossing the Sahara and the horn of Africa?

    If it’s the latter then surf in Yemen may be more regular than we think. Of course, the swell would be refracted and therefore reduced in size. Pakistan however, would cop the swell front on!
