Fantasea

A clip from Fantasea of George Greenough and mate (?) getting extraordinary slides on their mats. For more on mat riding visit the strange but inspiring crew at surfmatters. I am pretty keen to give it a go, especially in the small stuff … I have to get a decent mat. Imagine it down past the sheds at the point. Woah. Speed blur. Anyone have a good mat story?

And a clip of George (circa 1985) talking about why he rides a mat, it’s fascinating and insightful.

Thanks Mark.

Great to see George on the site. He is surfer number one in my book both peerless and modest.

The first surf craft I ever owned was a kind of Australian made mat called a surfoplane (Narm 6). Pre Morey Boogie surfos were really popular when I was a kid. They were good in the flags and over rocks – much more durable than coolites. And although they seem very crude compared to George’s vehicles, I like the idea that I started on an inflatable and thats probably what I’ll finish up on. When my knees go and my hips have had it – I know that a mat is what will keep me in the water.

    Viva le Surf Mat!
