‘Bondi’ – 1984

This photo of a teenage Thomas Williams, is by Jon Lewis and is held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Imagine being held to represent Bondi Beach, the way Thomas is here. Kind of amazing!

what a handsome young man, so pleasing to the eye. the pressure of representation doesn’t seem to be getting to him much at all, although something could well be in the raised eyebrow. i wonder how he’d hold up under a chortle and a spit on the ground from a beady-eyed little member of the north bondi fishing club.

  2. Thomas Williams says:

To the spit both eyebrows would have been raised and to the beady eyes he would have said something like “caught and fish lately?” or “seen any sharks round the point?”. If the beady eyes continued to stare he would have giggled and said “go’in for a swim – seeya”.
